The OB nurses at Sanford volunteer their time to make memorial boxes for families who suffer the loss of a child. These boxes provide families with items of comfort - molds of their hands and feet (if possible), handprints, footprints, hat, blanket, id bracelets for mom and baby and many items on grief and loss. These items are placed in a hand made box and brought to the family.
When Max was born, our nurse brought in his memorial box late that night. We didn't open it until morning and it brought us to tears as we held his little hands and feet. We chose to place the items in a shadow box that now hangs in our bedroom. These items allow us to have something tangible of our first born child.
This event helps to raise money for the materials to make these memorial boxes.
Sanford Children's Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU):
NICU's are amazing places and there are miracles performed every day. The tiniest of babies are cared for, loved, and nursed to health in this amazing place. Families go through an emotional roller coaster while their child is in the NICU.
When Laikyn was born, she was 3lbs 10oz and 17 inches long. She was a "big preemie" from what we were told. She was still very tiny to us. She spent just over 6 weeks in the NICU at Sanford and she was loved. It was amazing to watch the nurses care for our daughter and want the very best for her.
Miles for Max will also raise money for the needs of the Sanford Children's NICU.
